My first car was a Porsche 914. It was signal orange and was a 1.8. I loved that little car and it was amazing to be 16 and have such a cool little car. Our local dealer was Holberts, run by Al Holbers father, Al and his brother Bob. They were great to enthusiasts to have a s a dealer. At the time, Al ran Porsche Racing and their race shop was behind the dealer and run by Bob Russo. When I went to Lehigh University (Al Holberts alma mater) I would stop in knowing I would someday get a 911. As a Junior at Lehigh I finally had the resources to get my dream car, but was thwarted by being single, male and under 21. Insurance was impossible and they suggested I look for a used 911 3-4 yrs old. That they could insure. So I told my sales person at the dealership to find me a car. Back then people bought them and kept them! There was no trading it in for the current model. That was very rare.. In a years time, they showed me 2 cars, neither seemed to fit my interest. Finally, they took in a yellow targa. I wasn’t too interested in yellow, but it quickly grew on me. I bought it the next day. Al and his race shop offered to do some modifications at the time.. now they call them resto mods! They did all sorts of factory upgrades, retro, and to bring the motor forward. I still have that car today!
Over the years, I bought a 1979 930 turbo that I bought from a friend that grabbed it when they stopped importing them. I had that a few years and moved into the Ferrari world.. But, the Porsche bug always stayed with me. Once during a Ferrari outing, my 512TR broke the alternator belt. I was one of the senior instructors for the Ferrari club and a friend had driven a 911 to the track to watch. He offered me the 911 to continue my drivers education and I quickly saw that the normal 911 was so much more agile on the track than my monster 512TR. Right then and there I resolved to never be without a Porsche. Over the years I bout a few others, and currently have my 1975 Yellow 911, a Cayman S 2007 that is on dark olive metallic with a full natural leather interior (only one in that combo produced) and a 2006 911 Cab in Forest green with tan.
Currently my youngest daughter and her husband heeded my advice and now have a Macan S and a 2017 911 Turbo. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
I live in South Berwick ME, having moved here from working in NYC. I left after 9-11 and abandoned my role as the head of risk trading for a hedge fund. I partially designed my house and live here with my wife Mathilde and our two Bernese Mountain Dogs, River and Kit. I am a GA pilot nearing my IFR rating. I also got my private license when I was 17. We ski, bike, both have KTM 1290 Superduke GT motorcycles which we enjoy taking short or long rides on. Mathilde is a computational fluid dynamic engineer with 2 advanced degrees and has recently started her own business. We love to cook, enjoy food, travel, dogs! All things mechanical, and good friends.
