DER,
in conjunction with North Country Region, hosted the First Annual
Taste of the Track Charity Event on October 27th. With all proceeds
going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for kids, a number of DER
members got their first exposure to driving on a track and a taste
of how much fun PCA Driver Education events can be.
The day
began with a tour led by Rodd Carr from Portland to the NHIS track
in Loudon, NH. 15 club members joined the excursion for the 2 hour
scenic foliage drive with Ingrid Poulin at the rear picking up any
stragglers.
Participants
were then blended in to the ongoing Driver Ed event at NHIS. After a
classroom session explaining the basics of driving on a track, the
46 eager drivers were then led out onto the circuit behind a pace
car for several parade laps. Needless to say, there were many smiles
at that point and a desire for more!
27 of
the "rookies" were then given an opportunity to experience
the track at full speed with proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish
Foundation. Strapped into the passenger seats of the instructors'
cars, Track Sampler participants were given a session of laps at
higher speeds to get an even better feel for what a Porsche can really
do (without blue lights flashing in their mirrors!). Needless to
say, there will be a number of new members joining the DER
Drivers Ed events next season!
The
event was a huge success on many fronts. The charity event presented
Make-A-Wish with a check for $3040, the proceeds of the
Touring Group and Track Samplers, augmented by matching funds and an
additional donation from NCR. Our efforts will more than make a
dream come true for a child with a life threatening illness.
