It would have
been a trooper’s dream: a whole long line of Porsches
flying over the brow of a hill...BAM!...straight into a
speed trap.
But instead,
a trio of wild turkeys wandered into the road, slowed down
the Porsches, and the waiting trooper missed out on one of
the best “catches” of his career. What a tale that would
have made down at the donut shop!
Actually, the
cars lined up for DER’s Annual German Restaurant Tour were
already obeying the speed limit, thanks to group leader
Steve Atwell. Steve says, “I came over the hill, saw the
turkeys, and just then my new radar detector went off. I
thought, wow, it finds birds, too!”
If the
trooper manning the speed trap found his encounter with Down
East Region disappointing, the tour crew had no such
regrets. Gorgeous skies and emerging fall colors drew a fine
turnout, some 15 cars and 25 participants.
A cool breeze
kept the droptops up and Targa roofs on, but cruising down
twisty scenic roads to Orr’s and Bailey islands in a gang
of snarling Porsches made up for the cold.
The wind
howling off the water down at Land’s End had a distinct
autumnal bite. Whitecaps stretched as far out to sea as you
could see; former DER Prez Jeff Smith was out sailing that
day, which he says was almost as much fun as pedaling his
914-6 around. Climbing back into my old 911, I for one was
glad to have functioning heater boxes.
The tour
wound up at the newly opened Olde Munich Café and
Biergarten in Brunswick, where the German owner Hans was
thrilled to have his lot filled with Zuffenhausen’s
finest.
Hans’
restaurant was stocked with Germany’s finest as well:
home-style schnitzels, spicy pork chops and German biers
galore. Nobody went home hungry, that’s for sure.
In all, we
had a sehr gut day, even without the turkeys.
