LRP & Pocono Driver
Education, September 20-24, 2000
As
told by Rod Carr:
"On
Sept. 19th, Russ, Sally, Ned, and I met in
Kennebunk to caravan to Lime Rock.
On the 1st day, Russ’s car had a massive
electrical short. He
got up at 4 the next morning, trailered it to NH for
repairs, and was back for supper that night, but he lost
1-1/2 of the 2 days at Lime Rock.
Don had to miss the 1st day to attend a
business seminar, and joined us Wed nite.
Despite a small morning rain, I got in 2 good track
days. Don did
230 miles, and had a GOOD TIME, which we all heard
about for the next 3 days.
Fri
a.m. we used the motel parking lot to do brake jobs, change
wheels, etc., then caravanned to Pocono. Sally stayed behind for 2 more days at Lime Rock.
Steve Atwell and new track guy, Brian Poulin, met up
with us in Pocono.
Russ
had made all motel reservations for the trip, based on motel
lists provided by the host regions.
We got to our reserved hotel and it turned out to be,
well, er ....truly not worthy. We
repaired to a Wal-Mart parking lot and started calling name
brand motels – got in at a Ramada which was a definite
step up.
The
1st Pocono track day started very fast.
A steeply banked turn between two long straights –
flat out.
Then fog rolled in so you could not see one end on
the straight from the other.
First we had to abandon the banked turn for the
infield, then stop altogether after 2 runs.
The next day was still fogged in.
A group from Mass bailed out, along with many locals.
We were about to leave when the skies parted just
enough.
We got in nearly a full day, but without the high
speed turn.
Russ had been having an odd noise from the rear of
the car all day.
On the last lap of the last run, his transmission
went "grunch", and he came in at the end of a tow
rope for the 2nd time in 5 days."
