August 20
dawned bright and summery—an ideal day to entice shiny
Porsches out of hiding. DER’s annual Bar-B-concours event
drew some 26 clean-car enthusiasts to Jeff Smith’s place in
Yarmouth.
The idea was to
have a fun concours and cookout. Organizer and Head Judge Jeff
promised “mystery judging,” and that’s what we got.
Two long rows
of shiny Porsches lined his lawn, their owners buffing busily.
“It won’t do you any good!” yelled Jeff.
He carefully
scrutinized all the concours candidates, peering intently at
the interiors in particular.
Turns out the
judging had nothing to do with how clean or well restored the
cars were: prizes were based on random odometer readings!
First place, pre-1980:Ned
and Anne Vadakin , second to Duncan Smith .
First place, post-1980: Sally
Sprafka , second to Russ Radcliffe.
People's Choice: Brian
and Ingrid Poulin‘s restored ‘69 911E, which the two did
themselves.
The BBQ part of
the day held no mystery at all: just savory grilled chicken,
chops, and heaps of tasty salads.
