Meeting Minutes

June 21st, 2005

Office of Otis & Atwell, Gannett Drive, S. Portland (Steve Atwell)

Previous Meeting Minutes

Present: Steve Atwell, Linc Avery, Rod Carr, Don Michaud, Ned Vadakin, and Sally Sprafka

Meeting convened: 7:00 p.m.

General: We welcomed Ned as our new president.

Ned is interested in developing as complete a yearly plan of activities as possible, for timely publication in the newsletter.

There was an informal debriefing of the Zone 1 Concours and Rally last May.  Steve Atwell has submitted an article to Pano about the event.  There is also a write-up of the event on our website, with photos.

There was a brief discussion of what we would like the club to be, and how that would come out in our planning of activities.  It was agreed that different members attend different types of events, and so far we seem to have been able to schedule events that are of interest to a broad spectrum of members.  That includes social events such as the annual banquet; charitable fundraisers such as the Show N Shine at Mackworth Island; and tours, such as the tour to a German restaurant and/or to The Balsams; and the series of outings at Maine Indoor Karting.  There is a reasonably regular group who does Driver Ed events as well, with others encouraged to participate if interested.

There seems to be less interest in events such as judged concours, rallies, and autocross.

It was agreed that we develop and distribute a questionnaire to our membership to find out what they would be interested in.  Also who might be interested in working an event.  We haven't polled the membership regarding their interests in quite a while.

  • Ned will develop a questionnaire, and prepare a mailer.
  • Rod has an example that Ned might be interested in working from

We agreed that we would like to continue to increase and maintain membership, and one way to do that is to listen to what our members are interested in.  It was agreed to announce in the next newsletter, and on the website, that Board meetings will be revised to become membership meetings alternating bimonthly with Board-only meetings.  We will announce the dates and times of the meetings reasonably far in advance in the newsletter as well as on the website, and hope members attend and contribute.

Specific Events:  Tour to the Balsams:            Dutch Dresser expressed an interest in organizing a tour to The Balsams again this year.  He proposed July 31.  However that date is already taken by the Show N Shine at Mackworth Island.

  • Steve Atwell will get back to Dutch to propose an alternate date (September 11) for the tour.

Autocross:            Phil Winslow proposed an autocross.  We need a track, since Oxford Plains is quite far away for most people, and not very easy to access.  There was a time when the club put on autocrosses in Old Orchard Beach, and was able to use mall parking lots when the malls were closed on Sundays.  There was a good turnout.  If we could find a venue we might be able to rekindle interest in autocrossing.  It was suggested that school parking lots might be available if we could get permission to use one.

  • Sally Sprafka will check the parking lots at the University of New England for size and number and type of potential obstacles.

Rally:  The Zone 1 rally was reasonably well received by participants.  It was long.  There was a suggestion that we might design a short simple rally that ended at a restaurant, or a picnic location, thus making it a fun run plus social event.

Karting:            The event series at Maine Indoor Karting last winter attracted a great group of participants, some of whom attend few of our other events.  Another possibility would be to rent an outdoor go-Kart track for a half day and have Karting and a picnic in the summer.

  • Linc agreed to check with Maine Indoor Karting to see whether we can do something similar this winter.

Tentative Schedule:

Ice Cream Run                                                 Usually end of June.  Not able to do it this year.

Show N Shine at Mackworth Island                           July 31, 2005

Bar BQ Picnic and concours at Jeff Smith's                   Suggest August 21, 2005

  • Ned will contact Jeff
  • Don will coordinate the concours

Tour to The Balsams                                                            Suggest September 11, 2004

  • Steve Atwell will follow up with Dutch Dresser

Tour to German restaurant                                             October 2, 2005

  • Steve Atwell will arrange

Owl's Head Museum Foreign Car Meet                October 9, 2005

  • Rod Carr will follow up

Go-Karting                                                                   November-December, 2005. Also possibly Jan-Feb, or Feb-March 2

  • Linc will set up with Maine Indoor Karting

Annual banquet                                                 March 2006

Spring fling                                                                   April 2006

Newsletter: Our new newsletter editor is Will Lund.  We look forward to having him attend future meetings, to get his ideas for a possible new design and articles for the newsletter.

Next meeting:  Tuesday, July 12 at 7:00  p.m. at Office of Otis & Atwell, Gannett Drive, S. Portland (Steve Atwell)

Adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
