Learn about F1 Karting

Linc's first visit to Maine Indoor Karting:

"The MIK track features a check-in and observation area where the karting action can quietly and comfortably be viewed in its entirety through large windows. It was immediately apparent that the go karts were capable of some impressive speeds, especially in the hands of some of the seasoned drivers. After some initial waiting time while some of the other leagues competed, we were herded into a pre-staging room for an educational 15 minute class on the basics of how the cars worked and the rules of the track."

"Then it was on to the "Fitting Room" where we all donned driving suits, helmets and helmet collars, all provided by the track (you can use your own equipment if you prefer). At this point there was a palpable air of excitement (and some anxiety!) as the 13 men and one woman were escorted into the track area and assigned their numbered karts. A quick seat set-up, the engines were started, and we were released onto the track."

Learning to drive - again!:  These F1 karts feature crisp handling with impressive g-force cornering in a tiny wheelbase.

Down the Main Stretch:  The better drivers reach nearly 45 mph at their maximum speed.

"The karts were simply a hoot to drive! Their darting, g-force creating handling took a few laps to adjust to, but quickly everyone was dicing it up with some fun-filled laps combined with passing and occasional "bumping". Overtly aggressive driving behavior is discouraged and monitored  by the flaggers (2 Black Flags and you're out) but it really wasn't an issue for our group. Hey, we're not a competitive crowd, are we!(?)"

"Though the karts seemed fast, they're very safe. Collisions and spins were not uncommon but were harmless and just added to the thrills. And one could easily seek their own level and pace as a variety of pre-existing track experience produced a full spectrum of "getting up to speed" in this new environment. A number of members had never driven on a track in any kind of vehicle previously, yet progressively became more comfortable and faster as they familiarized themselves with the track and the behavior of the karts."

"In summary, everyone had a great time and after reviewing the printed lap times and rankings there was unanimous desire to do more events in the future. No previous experience is required to have fun and enjoy this activity, especially during the winter months when you aren't driving your fun car. At this point we're thinking it's time to get a league together to regularly race ourselves!"
