A sunny spring day
welcomes a new Cayenne at Morong’s
2003
Spring Fling!
Story by Glenn H. Hill
The annual DER Spring Fling is
a great event. The chance to get the car on the road and chat with fellow
DER members at the local Porsche dealership after the long, cold winter
somehow rejuvenates the senses and fills one with hope and enthusiasm for
the coming year. Well, such was the case on April 27th at
Morong Falmouth…the traditional home of the Spring Fling.

We may have had more attendees
in the past, but for the 14 members who did come to the Spring Fling, it
was a great event, and it is hard to recall another Spring Fling that had
more lively and entertaining conversation! Club Vice President, Joe
Thrift, was there early with the obligatory coffee and donuts along for
the ride. Bill Sowles, owner of Morong’s, also arrived early with the
keys to the shop and his 1959 356 Convertible-D in the parking lot. He
thoughtfully parked a new Cayenne SUV right out in front of the door, so
that the DER crowd could get a good look at the latest offering from
Zuffenhausen! With the Cayenne and three Boxsters outside and three 911’s
inside, Morong Falmouth was putting on a Porsche show all on it’s own!
More than one DER member remarked that Morong must be doing a lot more
Porsche business these days, which is potentially a very good thing for
the Down East Region!

This is a really beautiful car! |
A wide variety of cars sat in
the parking lot for folks to inspect. John Hammer brought his recently
acquired 928 with it’s unusual interior of gray-green leather that was
specially ordered by the original owner in Germany. It’s a stunning car,
and will undoubtedly be a feature at more DER events. Alan Seitel came
all the way down from Brewer in his early-‘85 944 with its unique blend of
“early” and “late” 944 features, having been made just before the mid-1985
changes were begun on the assembly line. Bill and Diana Gowen rumbled in
with their stunning red 914 “Wildebeest-II”, which caught the eye of more
than one Down Easter. Rick Difillip showed up with his gorgeous
Irish-green 911 coupe, and Gerry Giordano brought his brother-in-law,
Steve…a PCA member from California…along to prove that we do have some
rust-free cars here in Maine! Membership Chair Rod Carr got his 951 on
the road for the event, and Don Michaud arrived in a black 944…where does
he keep getting these cars?

The sun was shining most of
the time, and the temperature was not too chilly, so Mother Nature was on
our side for once. There was a lot of chatter about upcoming DER events,
and a few new ideas were batted about, so there may be some new offerings
to report on soon. Make sure to visit the club website frequently to see
how the club’s calendar is evolving! This was a fun event, and everyone
left with a friendly wave and a smile on their face. The Spring Fling is
a super way to start the Porsche season. Keep it in mind for next year!
We hope to see you there. As always, sincere thanks go to Bill Sowles and
Morong Falmouth for hosting the event.
Glenn
