From DER Prez
P-Car
Season 2001 Kicks Off
by Don McGilvery,
aka NINE44T
Since
our Winter newsletter, a lot has happened in our little club. March saw
the annual banquet, our best-attended event of recent years. This event at
the Portland Country Club in Falmouth featured (occasionally
incriminating) videos of DER members driving (and spinning) at track
events, as well as a continuous Power Point slide display of club members
and cars captured at various events throughout 2000.
Our guest Speaker, Ellen Beck, Past
President of North Country Region PCA and currently their Chief Driver
Education Instructor, provided a lively slide show and talk about her
cross-country road trip to last year's Porsche Parade in Sacramento, CA.
Her slides also provided great shots of road-tripping via 993 to
spectacular sites all over our great country. We handed out our annual
awards, voted in our Board of Directors for 2001, and loaded up on door
prizes. The meal was great, the camaraderie enjoyable, and the location
ideal--if you missed this banquet, you really missed a great time.

Spring Fling, April 22: Early 911s line up at DER’s first
season driving event. L to R: Editor Getchell’s ‘73 T coupe
(recently sold to a friend); Ralph Small’s ‘66 S coupe (family
owned since new) and pristine 72 S Targa of new members Tony and
Laurilyn Dowling. |
Our first club driving event started
P-Car season 2001 as a huge success. Morong Falmouth opened its doors to
our annual Spring Fling on April 22. The informal get-together drew at
least 40 club members and assorted Porsches—the perfect excuse to get
their cars out of mothballs, cleaned up, and on the road on what turned
out to be a glorious Spring day.
Weather was a bit less cooperative
for our annual Midcoast Mountains Tour to Camden, but a dedicated crew
rambled some 80 miles of back roads in the pouring rain. At Bonny Eagle
Car show, we enjoyed a gorgeous day and about 1500 classic autos of every
description. The ever-increasing list of PCA Driver Education track
activities is the focus for several club members. So there are plenty of
opportunities ahead to join your fellow Porsche freaks on road and track
with our great little club.
Speaking of track, I'd like to once
again extend an open invitation to any member interested in observing
and/or participating to join DER “trackies” at a future event. I got
hooked on the track by attending an event with a fellow club member as an
observer...and after that I just had to drive. DE events let us enjoy our
cars on historic road courses. I know my fellow trackies will be very
happy to “show you around” and we know you’ll have a great time,
even if you never decide to participate further. Hope to see you at one of
our upcoming events.
Don
