Storms
fail to faze this year’s Midcoast Ramblers
Flight
of the Faithful
by
Dave Getchell
Only
the hardest of the Porsche
hard-cores had the heart to show up for this year’s rain-soaked Midcoast
Mountains Ramble. But even the heaviest downpours of a drought-ridden
spring failed to dampen DER’s enthusiasm. The reward for getting
normally spotless Porsches totally encrusted with grime? Empty roads and
clearing skies as the day progressed.
The route wound some 80
miles back and forth through the midcoast mountains, seeking out the
twistiest twisties and whoopiest whoop-de-doos. Slick roads added more
than a touch of excitement.

Yee-haw:
Boost-monster 930 blasts off. Rain? What rain? (Rand Surgi photo) |
The flying faithful
included: Rand & Kathy Surgi in “Old 911,” Linc Avery in his
wicked race-prepped 930 with yours truly co-driving as pilot trainee, and
Steve & Rachel Goulet in their black Carrera Targa. Ayres Stockely
dropped the top on his 911 Cab the minute the rain let up.

Bill & Ann Covington
drove their arrest-me-red Carrera coupe, while Don and Cheryl McGilvery
braved the muck in their 944T. As Linc’s Turbo sashayed sideways when
the boost banged in on a slimy uphill bend, all I could say was, sure glad
it ain’t snowing! All in all, a most memorable ramble. Don’t miss next
year’s edition, no matter what the weather.
