DER’s
Chez Smith Bar-B-concours
Great weather with a great turn-out!

Members of the
Down East Region got lucky again this year with great weather, great cars, and
great people at the Annual DER-BBQ, held as always at Past President Jeff
Smith’s house in Yarmouth. This year showed a record turnout of approximately
24 Porsches, and about 36 Down-Easters making the trek. Most remarkable was the
number of new members who showed up, as well as how much of a “family event”
this has become. DER President Don McGilvery finds this to be a very
encouraging trend, and is especially pleased to see so many fresh faces at
recent events. Naturally, there was plenty of food available, and Chez Smith
has outdone himself once again. However, what many people may not realize is
that Jeff and club secretary Sally Sprafka apparently have an ongoing salad
rivalry going, and this year Sally is claiming a decisive victory as her
brightly-colored garden salad was gobbled up long before Jeff’s entry was gone.
This sounds like a real grudge-match, so we’ll have to check back next year to
see who laughs last.
Just as exciting as the social gathering was the variety of cars
brought to the BBQ. Porsches from every era graced the rolling lawn of the
Smith estate, from a gorgeous 1958 Speedster to several 2002 996’s, and
certainly everything in-between. Naturally there was concours judging,
conducted this year by Don McGilvery. This year’s surprise criteria for judging
centered around license plate numbers and letters. Simply, whichever license
plate added up to the highest number was declared the winner. Letters were
given their numerical equivalent. Unusual? Yes! However, there were plenty of
laughs and smiles, so mission accomplished! Results of the BBQ concours are
below.
Plenty of pictures were taken so if you weren’t there, you can get a
feel for what a great event this was. We’ve got a few here, and there are more
on the website in the Photos section. Maybe we’ll
see even more new faces and great cars at next year’s event!
