Mystery judging, Chapter 2

Don De Judge: Michaud wears impish grin as he checks for oddball stuff in the glovebox concours.

For the second year in a row, a passel of painstakingly prepared Porsches showed up for DER’s Annual Chez Smith Bar-B-Concours. For the second year in a row, entrants had no idea what the judging criteria were.

And for the second year in a row, when they DID find out, everyone howled with laughter. This year’s judging involved a Glovebox Concours based on number and oddity of items stashed in the glovebox.

Track beastie: Ned Vadakin’s black 914-6 racer: Note fat tailpipe and, um, all-season rear tires.

The People’s Choice selection, voted by the entrants themselves, produced an unusual tie: the crowd split evenly between the sparkling silver 993 of Steve and Kyle Atwell, and the immaculate black Carrera Targa of Steve and Rachel Goulet. Head Judge Don Michaud was heard to comment, “I’d be glad to drive either one home, weird glovebox stuff and all”

Flares-n-chairs: Shapely fenders and high-back buckets define Rich DeFillip’s ‘75 Carrera.
