Historic motorsport at Lime Rock

Porsche-heads all
over Maine are eyeing their mothballed cars and counting the days till spring
rains wash a winter’s worth of salt and grime off the roads...and the P-cars
come out to play.
Down East Region has all manner of events on tap
for your Porsche season (see calendar, adjoining page) and the hardest part will
be deciding which ones to attend. Local tours, car shows, Driver Ed days, Zone 1
Concours, autocrosses, how can I ever make them all? Hey, I don’t worry, just
pack up the old 911 and take off!
One of the new events I’m most excited about is
a historic motorsports extravaganza coming to Lime Rock Park in Connecticut.
In the spirit of events held at Monterey and
Watkins Glen during Porsche’s 50th Anniversary celebration in 1998, Porsche
Cars North America, in conjunction with Brian Redman and his Intercontinental
Events, Inc., have created a race meeting featuring vintage Porsche race cars
and legendary Porsche race drivers.
Called the Porsche Rennsport Reunion, the new event will be held at Connecticut’s
Lime Rock Park on July 27-29, 2001. It will feature a three-day program of
on-track competition plus a Sunday Concours d’Elegance, which will be open to
the event’s participants by invitation.
“The Rennsport Reunion will highlight some of the most significant and
historic racing cars in Porsche’s storied history,” said Fred Schwab,
president and C.E.O. of Porsche Cars of North America. “It will also serve to
re-unite these cars with some of the drivers who took them to glory on race
tracks around the world. It will be a very special event!”
Additional details of the Porsche Rennsport Reunion can be found on Porsche Cars’
web site (www.porsche.com) or at Brian Redman’s Intercontinental web site (www.gorace.com).
Ticket information is available by contacting Lime Rock Park at 1-800-722-3577
or 1-860-435-5000.
This issue also marks the return of DER’s own
356 maven, Glenn Hill. He’s ferreted out the story on an early Porsche that
scared mighty Ford half to death. Yeah!
