DER makes the cover of
Panorama!
Who says
those “car-in-a-barn” stories never happen! This one sure did!

Did you notice anything unusual about the cover of the
June 2003 Panorama? How could you miss a MAINE car on the cover? That’s
scarcer than treasures from King Tut’s tomb!
The big story in the June edition of Panorama was no less
than that of the now-famous “Barn Car” which won the PCA Preservation Class at
the 2001 Parade in Milwaukee. The Barn Car is now in the knowledgeable hands of
our very own Tom and Holly McKenny. Tom also happens to be the PCA National
Parade Chairman. The credit for finding the elusive Barn Car goes to Don
Michaud, our region’s own 356-maven. It was Don who did the research necessary
to bring the 1959 Cabriolet out from the shadows. When asked if he secretly
wishes that he had kept the car for himself, Don merely shrugs, “sure,
sometimes, but it has found a perfect home with the McKenny’s, how can I argue
with that?”

DER goes big-time! The license plate
says it all |
Don is the first to praise previous owner John Stickney’s
preservation work. “He knew the car was going back on the road someday,
and prepared the car accordingly”, says Don. “Not every car stored for
long periods is so well-prepared.” After the recovery, the car
basically just needed the fluids changed, a brake overhaul, tune-up, and a
thorough cleaning. Then it was off to the Porsche Parade and a
first-place finish in the highly competitive Preservation Class concours, a
relatively new category that has already affected the worldwide market for
well-preserved original Porsches.
It isn’t to often that
Maine makes the big-time, but when we do, look out! Keep looking in those barns
too! There might be some more untouched old Porsches out there!
