2002 DER German Restaurant Tour

Story & photos by Kyle Atwell

Bright blue skies greeted all the enthusiastic participants on Sunday afternoon in the Wal-Mart parking lot. In fact, some participants arrived before the organizers!

There were also a few last minute shoppers to Wal-Mart before the tour began, including myself for those necessary walkie-talkie batteries for the cars at both ends of the tour.

Super turnout for this event! Here's just some of the fourteen cars that hit the road looking for something to eat. Did they find what they were looking for? You bet they did! This is just one several great DER events that really shine!

We welcomed both old and new members alike. Participants included: Rachel and Steve Goulet, Dianne and Rejean Tremblay, Larry Thuet, Joanne and Stephen Hollenbeck, Bob and Karen Dionne, Dutch and Elaine Dresser, Lynda and David Seaman, Jeff Smith, Harold and Saundra Trieber, Jerry and Gloria Giordano, Davis Ivezic, Anthony Jessen, Rand and Kathy Surgi and Steve and Kyle Atwell. Russ and Mary Radcliffe joined us at the restaurant.

The Atwells led the way and the Surgis brought up the rear keeping all fourteen cars going in the same direction. We went on a 70-mile, two-hour tour from Falmouth to Topsham through the picturesque villages of Yarmouth, New Gloucester, Poland Spring, Durham, Lisbon Falls and Bowdoinham Center.

Although the foliage was not quite as vibrant as it usually is during the first weekend of October, the pavement was almost entirely brand new and the roads seemed to have just the right number of twists and turns.

We pulled into the Old Munich Restaurant parking lot at exactly 5:00 PM, albeit some in a rather circuitous fashion playing follow the (secondary) leader...we think!  The restaurant was well prepared for hosting this rather large gathering, putting us altogether in a comfortable alcove. Then came beverages and a sumptuous repast.  Most everyone seemed to choose from the authentic German offerings on the menu including the beer and the wine.

A great time was had by all...making new friends and reminiscing with old.  We look forward to seeing YOU at next year’s tour!
