Frozen
cars and hot ideas!
By Glenn Hill
PORSCHEFORME Editor
You
know, I never really disliked winter until I got a Porsche. OK, OK, my old BMW
motorcycle didn’t help matters either, but that was a bike…I’m talking about a
fully enclosed car with a heater. I could theoretically still use it even
though it’s freezing out! Yeah, I know I’ve got a 356, and the heater is mostly
ornamental, but I could at least take the chill off with it! Of course, I’m
ignoring the biggest stumbling block to my enjoyment of Porsche motoring…the
fact that I’m STILL not done with the sheet metal work and there’s no front
suspension on the car! So I guess it’s not completely old man winter’s fault,
but somehow there’s still a connection. Maybe it’s because I don’t feel like
going out to the garage to lay on a cold floor with either rust flakes or sparks
falling in my face. Believe it or not, that’s a lot more tolerable when the
weather’s warm.
Well, despite my Porsche
restoration blues, there are some very good reasons to smile! Amazingly, we’ve
got the Down-East Region Annual Banquet coming up in just a few
months…specifically on March 15th. If you’ve never been to one of our banquets,
please make the effort this time around. It’s a fun night with great people and
great food. We’ve got some unusual events planned for this year’s banquet.
Check out the events calendar for more information. If you’re feeling REALLY
brave, the banquet committee could really use a hand with all the tasks involved
in throwing a decent party. Please contact Don McGilvery if you feel you can
spare some time. It would certainly be appreciated.
Speaking of pitching-in,
I once heard someone say, “a club belongs to those who run it”. I know that
sounds condescending, but unfortunately that’s the way it is, isn’t it? I mean
if no other voices are heard from, then things are going to get done the way the
Board of Directors sees fit. At a recent BOD meeting, there was talk about the
club leadership feeling a little “detached” from the rest of the club.
Naturally, there were many thoughts and opinions, but one thing that was
unanimously agreed upon was that we need more input and assistance from the rest
of the club. We want to hear from you! Would you like to come to a Board of
Directors meeting and voice your opinion or hear what‘s being planned? You are
more than welcome to do so! BOD meeting schedules will now be listed in the
Events Calendar for just that reason. If you can’t come to a meeting, contact
one of the club officers listed in the front of the newsletter. Believe me,
they’re all very approachable and receptive. Remember, this is YOUR club as
much as it is anyone else‘s, and that’s the way everyone wants it to be!
Also, I want to make sure
I extend a big THANK YOU to those who contributed materials for this issue.
Kyle Atwell, Sean Glenn, and Steve Goulet all provided either photos or articles
for your viewing and reading pleasure. I personally think this issue is just
fantastic, and with fresh ideas and material from all you Down-Easters out
there, there’s no reason we can’t have a super newsletter EVERY time! A little
effort goes a long way...and yes, it DOES make a difference!
So,
I suppose I had better get back out to the garage and start welding! The 2003
Porsche season is here, and there’s a great bunch of folks in the Down East
Region to enjoy it with! What could be more worthwhile than that?
Glenn
